bsp; This time of year our various farm out-buildi gs which are made out of u treated/u pai ted wood receive some u welcome visitors, the carpe ter bees (ge us Xylocopa based o the Greek ame for wood cutter). These large bees ( ot the same as bumblebees which have a hairy abdome ) do two thi gs that make them pests- they drill holes i wood for their ests a d the males hover i a me aci g fashio right i fro t of your face. The holes are almost perfectly circular a d it is remarkable how the bees are able to cut them out of wood with their jaws. The tu els e ter a d the tur at right a gles to parallel the edges of pla ks a d ca be a pote tial problem to the stre gth of the wood if there are e ough of them. Although Wikipedia says that the burrows do ot pose a threat to wood structures, you may judge for yourself from the photo of some sidi g with multiple burrows. It seems to be similar i []
