These mandrels are great for beginning ring makers trying to get started at a lower cost. The mild steel material, while not as corrosion-resistant, is soft enough that accidental contact with your turning tools will minimize any damage to the cutting edge. Each mandrel is supplied with a mandrel key simply tighten to expand the mandrel for a secure hold on your ring. A small lip is machined on the largest step for easy positioning of the ring.
